Windsor and Eton Relief Road
Updated June 2010
The Windsor and Eton Relief Road is the main traffic artery into the area and carries 22 million vehicles per year. It gets particularly busy during the Legoland season, Ascot and Windsor Races and other events such as State Visits and the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The route will also be carrying extra traffic to the 2012 Olympic rowing event.
The Relief Road has been a road traffic collision ‘black spot’ for Windsor Fire Crews who have also experienced many vehicle fires there too. These types of incidents, plus breakdowns, cause a rapid and serious blockage of that traffic artery. That in itself is a concern since the Brigade wishes to CLOSE Windsor Fire Station at NIGHT and attempt to use cover from Slough.
That concept is problematic for several reasons. Firstly, Slough is a busy station and may therefore NOT be available to cover Windsor. Secondly, if Slough is available, they will have longer travel distances than the current Windsor Firefighters who can be deployed quickly within their own area. Thirdly, a highway incident as described above can choke the Relief Road with traffic.
The Relief Road is about to undergo a major refurbishment programme starting in June 2011 and is expected to carry on for a year. This will also involve NIGHT lane closures, so we trust that the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service will suspend plans to CLOSE Windsor Fire Station?
